Weiss Distillery in Clawson, Michigan
January 15, 2023
Weiss Distillery has been making a name for itself in the Metro Detroit area with their innovative spirits and distilling practices. They are based in Clawson, an old enclave just south of Troy and Royal Oak. The company will also have a retail space and a speakeasy-style tasting room. Its flagship product, Weiss vodka, is made from a blend of juniper berries and corn. WDC will eventually expand into distribution, but until then you can visit their flagship location for a sample of their award-winning vodka and learn all about their unique process.
For now, they are building up to their grand opening in the spring. As the premier distillery in the area, they are launching a slew of original, high-quality spirits, including vodka, bourbon, gin, and rum. Most are distilled locally, with a few made abroad. In keeping with their motto of creating great local products, they are working with Caribbean distilleries to create their own take on a traditional rum.
They also have a new “Weiss on Ice” program launching in November. This will be a one-of-a-kind experience. There Weiss Distillery will be a snow-covered wall, giant nutcrackers, and a slew of other winter-themed activities. One of the best parts is that you will be able to sip your drink in a specially approved disposable vessel. Unlike other places, you will be able to enjoy the festive atmosphere while you wait for your libation.
If you’re looking to try the best of the best, be sure to check out the aptly named, White Lightning Whiskey, which is modeled after traditional Appalachian moonshine. You can sample a sip of this unique spirit from a tasting station in the ground floor. While you’re there, you may also want to check out the ice-cutting workshop.
While you’re there, make sure to try the Roggenaer Special Reserve gin. A generous rye character coupled with a herby flair, this one will knock your socks off. Also, the Straitjacket Gin is made from twelve botanicals. And while it’s not exactly the most practical of the bunch, it is a fun and well made cocktail.
In the name of simplification, the Weiss on Ice program has to be the most impressive one, but the fact is there are so many cool things to do in Clawson. Whether you’re into craft beer, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mexican or Mexican-American cuisine, Clawson has something for everyone. Be sure to take the time to explore this unique and eclectic community while you’re there. You may even find a place to stay. After all, it’s only 2.2 miles away from Royal Oak and Troy.
